Homelite model UT32655A Solid 1 piece shaft, tall box
4 Star Review   By NYHOMEOWNER on Home Depot - May 27, 2013

Despite continuously abusing my 5 years old Homelite (using 2 y.o. fuel mix, never following instruction on how to start it, leaving it outside in the snow and rain, storing it with fuel still in it), it still worked till Sandy storm killed it. It was however very hard to start. I was wondering with the new Homelite if I followed starting instruction and used known good fuel mix, would it be any problems at all? Here is my experience with it: Bought premixed 40:1 solution (not 50:1) as someone here suggested. FOLLOWED INSTRUCTION! It stared right up 3 + 2 pulls. Was ready to trim in 10 seconds. Did not have to warm it up. It would pick up high RPM right away. When it was hot I shut it off. Pull string 2 times without priming - starts right back. Turned off and on many times with 1 - 2 pulls. If I mix my own fuel now and it does not work I will know what the problem is. By the way premixed fuel is 92+ octane and no ethanol added. Compared to my old Homelite model: The choke is re-designed. Does not interfere with operation anymore where you push it accidentally. The choke looks like a 3 position switch now instead of a knob. I would say this is an improvement. Transmission: I did not have this before. Takes getting used to. I wish it would pick up sooner. All this wasted RPM where head does not turn yet. Fuel tank: Brown. Who makes an "improvement" like that? There was nothing wrong with white fuel tank. Could see how much fuel left before. Not anymore. It is brown now. Vibration: As before, it does vibrate quite a bit, no improvement here. Throttle: It is more responsive now. Easy to set correct RPM. Definitely improvement. Grass deflector: Smaller than before. But I would not rely on it. Eye-wear protection is a MUST. Power: Has plenty of power. I did not use it at max RPM yet. Did not need to. Bump head worked nicely. String came wound loose inside the head from the factory. This is the way it should be. If you wind it too tight, string will fuse itself together with the heat and Bump head will not dispense the string properly. I must say over an hour I did not use much of the sting doing chain link fences and concrete edging. After I finish I let it ran out of fuel to prevent engine gum-up. I just noticed handle moved after I tighten it. It is a different handle design. I bought 1 piece shaft model instead of 2 piece to avoid 2 piece connection problems. Although, 2 piece design will allow for different attachments I suspect. I really do not see why this trimmer would not last a long time with some minimum care and very little maintenance over the years. If there is any changes I will update my review. Overall I am happy with my purchase. I gave it 4 stars because of features and Vibration. I just can't see myself paying 200 - 300 doll for a string trimmer. Considering that warranty on them is usually Non-existent. All trimmers do the same thing the 95 dollar one and 500 dollar one. They trim the grass with the string, nothing more than that. I have very nice lawn mower for the real work. I do however wish that this Homelite trimmer came with remote control :)

Giving it 4 stars... for now!
4 Star Review   By bdgo on Home Depot - May 11, 2013

Although the reviews aren't all that good, i went ahead and got this today. I was deciding between the Echo for $199, Toro for $169 and this for $94 i think. I wanted a trimmer that could use Ryobi heads and this one fit the bill, also the toro accepts those attachments as well. The echo attachments are more expensive. It was easy to start, first pull! But the head did not rotate right away and bogged down, then died. Let it warm up... no issues, went right to work. Plenty of power for my 1/4 acre yard. Just trimming moderately today, not bushwacking for 30 minutes of continuous use, did not falter one bit. I feel like it is a good purchase so far... but I hope it continues to run good season after season.

Disposable Trimmer
2 Star Review   By SE2013 on Home Depot - Apr 22, 2013

Works well as long as it runs. Bought this model May of 2011, and used it maybe twice a month during the summer. As of April 2013 it doesn't have enough compression to start. Called Homelite CS and they referred me to local service tech who charges $40 just to look at it and decide it it is covered under warranty. Is it worth fixing? How long will the unit last after being repaired? I think I'll spend my money on a better unit. Read the warranty carefully - you will likely need it.

Great Little Trimmer
5 Star Review   By Amac65 on Home Depot - Apr 8, 2013

I bought mine back in 2008. The modle number has changed but it's stil the Homelite 26cc straight shaft gas trimmer. Every trimmer will require maintance and proper care to last, regardless of brand name. I bought in mine 2008 because of the price. At the time, I figured if it lasted 2 seasons, it would be worth the money and then I would later upgrade to a profesional grade trimmer. Now it's 2013 and Im going into my 6th seasons with this trimmer and its still going strong. It's powerfull, light weight and easy to handle. I have owned several other gas trimmers. Some of my previous trimmers did have larger motors, but there is no diffrence in power. I have a mdeium sized yard and I use this one to edge, trim and cut a ditch that holds water. I spend at least an hour and half using the trimmer and burn through a little more then a tank of fuel everytime I use it. So, while im not using it on a commercial bases, it's not exactly light duty either. I have repaired this trimmer several times since I bought it. Every repair was cheap and easy and the same stuff you would change on any gas trimmer that gets used frequently. I have changed the primer bulb a couple times, the fuel lines and filter, spark plug and the bump knob a couple times.

1 Star Review   By Hawktuner on Home Depot - Apr 4, 2013

I have an ST-275 Homelite, and have had it for 19 years. I have had no issues, and only changed plugs twice. I use it every summer, and tough on my equipment. I purchased this one thinking I would have the same luck.....not at all. This unit is hard to crank, two piece shaft has play in it, and craftsmanship is poor. Homelite I am disappointed.

Cheap piece of Junk
1 Star Review   By Alex on Home Depot - Mar 27, 2013

This thing has never run right. Like many other reviews have said, You have to pull on it for 30minutes to get it running... once running it wont stay running in "run" mode. I've wasted so many hours dinking around with this piece of junk. Ive tried new spark plugs new fuel lines... nothing made it any better. After all the time wasted im going to throw it the trash and just spend the money for a good unit. Do not make my mistake. AVOID THIS TRIMMER!

4 Star Review   By ETYLERATL on Home Depot - Jan 26, 2013

I inherited this from a previous homeowner and it had been stored out on the elements & rain for about 8 months, give or take...So, I went to Home Depot and purchased a new fuel line/primer kit and spark plug. Replaced both items, filled up with fresh fuel and it runs like a champ! Very impressed with this trimmer. Definitely sold me on Homelite!!!

Homelite 26SS Straight Shaft 26CC trimmer
5 Star Review   By Ryan1296 on Home Depot - Nov 17, 2012

I bought my Homelite 26SS trimmer new in July of 2010. Since then I have put over 70 hours on the trimmer and it has never let me down not even once. I have used high quality synthetic oil in it instead of the low quality oil that comes with it. I let it break in when I bought it by using it at half throttle for the first 3 tanks of fuel. I also put an air filter on it and didn't run it like the way it came with out one. I now run it on fully synthetic oil at a 50:1 ratio and it's still going strong going on the third season. It doesn't have much power but it is extremely reliable and has decent compression to boot. I would recommend one for basic occasional use but if you want something that's going to last a long time and have good power spend the extra money for a higher quality machine and you'll be happy. But for the price I payed for my Homelite I love it and will continue to use it until it's so worn out that it doesn't run anymore.

BEST TRIMMER I HAVE USED
5 Star Review   By Nathan on Home Depot - Sep 24, 2012

I have owned this Gas Trimmer for 2 months shy of 3 years now... have not had a single problem and i cut down fox tails, Crab Grass, weeds, and so forth with no problem. the only Replacement Items i have to replace is String and gas... o and the little red plastic head that holds the Spool in place. but it's my first time having to replace that part and it's only $10. this product is good if you take care of it.

Do not waste your money
1 Star Review   By homeowner on Home Depot - Sep 20, 2012

Bought this unit less than 6 months ago and has not worked well since the third use, unit will not run unless 1/2 choke. Customer service said it was a carburetor adjustment. Unit will not start at all now and took it to their authorized service center, paid $30.00 fee for them to look at it and was told the money would be refunded if covered under their 2 year warranty. Received call from service center and was told the carburetor was bad, internal shaft was separating and the engine had little compression. None of which was covered by Homelite. Repairs would be more than buying a new one, into the dumpster it went. Trimmer is cheap price for a reason, spend your money on another brand and avoid the aggravation. Lesson learned.

Junk, tough to load, impossible to get trimmer head off
1 Star Review   By Mickey on Home Depot - Sep 15, 2012

We have owned this for a year and only use it every other week during the summer. Just like last year it is impossible to get the spool retainer off when the string needs to be replaced. Just junk we have replaced the spool retainer countless times and replaced the threads at the end of shaft twice. I have a five year old Echo at home and never had a problem using it constantly. Don't buy!!!

Works as planned
5 Star Review   By Shibe on Home Depot - Sep 10, 2012

I am seeing alot of bad reviews for this weedeater, guess i was lucky and did not get a lemon like some of these other posters did. Despite reading the reviews before purchasing, I decided to take a chance on this model to update my almost 15yo Homelite HLT-28 31cc version. Being that my old Homelite lasted me so long, I thought I would take a chance on the newest version of the same type as my old one. I never had any major problems with my last Homelite, was sometimes hard to start, but once going it would not fail me. Paid around $120 for my HLT-28 15yrs ago. Paid under $100 for this latest version- just a reminder, if you are military, Home Depot will give you a discount. I have only used my new weedeater once for the latest home mowing job and it worked flawlessly. It is nice to have a weedeater that runs as designed ie I do not have to nurse the trigger to keep it running at idol. After 15yrs regular seaonal wear and tear, my old Homlite was just tired, I am sure an engine rebuild would get it back to par but I do not have the time or patience to tear my old one apart. Needless to say, my new Homelite gets my basic yard work done effortlessly where my tired Homelite struggled.

my first one lasted 7 years. the first day i got it,it paid for its self. i had to clear the canal embankment at my new home. my second one is 7 years old now and needs a carb. for what anyone wants for a carb. i can spend a few more dollars and start new again. i started it the way it says and it has always started for me on the 2nd pull. i would recommend it for homeowners but not for commercial use

1 Star Review   By cookster on Home Depot - Sep 8, 2012

I purchased this 3 years ago...used 3 times one summer....next summer would not start...bought from Home depo in Moncton, N.B.....they told me where to bring it for repairs...I brought it in to where Home Depo told me to and they said it was not worth repairing...the motor was gone and warranty was over. So I lost out, but got to use it 3 times...wow...no more home-lite products for me

1 Star Review   By probationman on Home Depot - Sep 1, 2012

Had this unit for two hours: 30 minutes of assembly and getting unit ready to operate, 30 minutes of use in a 90 minute timespan, as I spent 60 minutes attempting to re-feed the line, as the feed system was so poorly designed. My ten year old Riobi had a better feed system. Back to the store I went.

Unexpectedly Great
5 Star Review   By Howie on Home Depot - Aug 30, 2012

I am stepping down from an Echo to the straight shaft Homelite and loving it. My Echo was a great trimmer and lasted a good five years but was backed over as of late. I purchased and returned two other trimmer brands due to issues of low power and engine noise. The Homelite turns my after market trimmer head with power to spare. It's not nearly as loud as some of those other brands, and doesn't get weeds wrapped inside the shaft head connection. It could have used a bigger debris gaurd, but i cant complain, the price was well worth the product.

A $95 weed whacker
4 Star Review   By charlie on Home Depot - Aug 18, 2012

I had a Homelite before and when I moved out of state I decided I would buy a new one (old one was about 3yrs old). Since my yard is all grass and only need to trim around house I didn't want to spend $250+ on a weed whacker that I would only use 15 minutes when I needed to cut. When I used it I expected it to be a $95 weed whacker, it does what it needs to do and I have no problems. The only issue I had was when I first went to start it, I didn't read the part where it said prime 10x, i did 4x, then 3x for about five minutes. The next day I read instructions and primed 10x, pulled 2x full choke and 1 time half choke and started right up and used it for about 15 minutes no problems. Not sure if it makes a difference but I use the premixed 50:1 fuel. If you're buying a $95 weed whacker and expecting a $95 weed wacker you should be in good shape. However if you're expecting it to act like a$300 Echo you will be disappointed.

Conditionally Recommended
4 Star Review   By Rick on Home Depot - Jul 12, 2012

This is the best "cheap" trimmer I have ever used. It is lighter and runs cooler than any other I have tried. It has not failed in 2 seasons of heavy use; going through over 100ft of string, 1 spool retainer, and less than 1 gallon of fuel. Yes, it starts hard and only runs with partial choke, but is breaking in and now runs without choke when it is hot - this was true of other inexpensive ones I've used.

Don't be fooled...
1 Star Review   By Dave on Home Depot - Jul 9, 2012

This is actually one of the most expensive trimmers on the market when you consider that it will only last you one season at best. It is a cheap, underpowered, china made headache... even on the rare occasion that you get it running. Don't buy this one!

Don't waste your money
2 Star Review   By couion on Home Depot - Jul 8, 2012

The worst thing about this trimmer is the clutch. You have to run the engine at wide open throttle all of the time. This increases fuel usage and pollution and also chews up trimmer line very fast. I had starting issues with it early on but after fine tuning the carburetor it starts and runs fine now. The shaft gets tangled up if you are in taller grass because the head of the trimmer is too short. Bottom line is spend a little more money and get a better trimmer.

Cheap unit
2 Star Review   By MB2702 on Home Depot - Jul 3, 2012

This unit won't last more than 6-12 months. My last one lasted about 12 months. I didn't want to buy a $300 unit because I don't use it excessively, so I bought another Homelite for $95. I figured it would last another 12 months. Well the first "new" one lasted two uses and then the motor wouldn't excelerate enough to cut anything. I took it back after two weeks and exchanged it for another one. The second "new" one lasted two uses and the motor did the same thing!!! It's going back tomorrow and they can't keep this piece of junk!! Use this review as a warning, DO NOT Buy this weed eater.

one word, junk
1 Star Review   By TexOne on Home Depot - Jun 26, 2012

What ever you do, stay away from Homelite products, they're cheap for a reason. I learned the hardway. Just like so many other reviews, the dang thang won't run in run, 1/2 choke only, and once you get it to commit, you have to keep it at full throttle, sounds like I'm using a chain saw to trim the weeds. The Homelite gas blower does the exact same thing. I'm rapping the shaft around a tree so it will fit in my trash can and also to ensure some unsuspecting passer by doesn't think they're getting a curb side bargin.

Didn't last
2 Star Review   By RichD on Home Depot - Jun 26, 2012

Bought this trimmer in June of 2010 and it worked until fall of that year when the metal tube shaft broke at the guard clamp. In the following spring (2011) I returned it to Home Depot and they replaced it. I waited until spring because I really wasn't sure I wanted another one, it seemed poorly designed but by spring I was willing to give it another try. It functioned without problem until yesterday when the shaft broke again in the same place, suspicions confirmed, poor design. I bought an Echo today that has a better overall rating and appears to have a more robust design.

Easy to start, powerful.
4 Star Review   By Jethro on Home Depot - Jun 23, 2012

I bought this because the re-chargeable I tried out didn't work for me due to battery life issues. This model started right up, and ran like a top. It is extremely powerful and easy to handle & control. I will revisit if my perception changes after several uses.

Typical Made In China Quality
1 Star Review   By Texxas on Home Depot - May 29, 2012

This trimmer worked well for about four (4) months. But like so many other reviewers' experience, the trimmer stopped operating on "run" and would only operate on "Half Choke" until it completely stopped running at all. Should have gone with my gut feeling and buy from a different manufacturer.

I brought this product back 2 hours after I purchased it. I used it ten minutes had to stop and refeed the string 4 times the line kept disapearing. 40 years ago my father bought a homelight chain saw that lasted 35 years I was hooked on homelight products now they are just poorly made cheap hunks of so they can charge less than $150

Concern over debris.
3 Star Review   By moose on Home Depot - May 21, 2012

I recently bought this model to replace a 14 year old Homelite curved shaft model that worked well for years but started having line feed problems. This is my first experience with a straight shaft string trimmer, a $30 upgrade over the curved shaft model. It starts well and the line feeds very nice. The down sides for me are: There is more debris thrown in my face. This may be due to the smaller shield as well as the fact that you have to run near top speed to engage a centrifugal clutch. This model also runs CCW which will take some time for me to adjust. The top mounted engine seems to have a higher CG which makes control more difficult. The longer shaft does not ease the problem of having to bend over slightly. Time will tell but I have not found an advantage for the $30 premium. I would recommend a full face shield, not just safety glassed.

Junk with NO Customer Support
1 Star Review   By DaveG on Home Depot - May 18, 2012

Yes, it runs (ran). The string will spin and cut grass. Except, in less than one cutting season, it will only run in half choke and cuts out as soon as you switch it to run. Called the "help" line and the lady says it needs a carburetor adjustment which requires a "special tool" and can only be done at specific service centers, none of which are less than an hour from my house. $95 down the drain.

you would think after all these years they could build a better trimmer, not the case. with less that 15 minutes of use-this one gets so hot around the shaft and the red housing that you can't touch it.i have owned many homelite trimmers, the more they design the worse they get. DO NOT BUY HOMELITE- I bought a troybuilt last year, i had too return it as well.

takes 30 minutes to start
1 Star Review   Home Depot

I have to pull for 30 minutes to start it. Sometimes it won't start at all. If you are lucky enough to get it to start, it won't run in "run" mode. It sputters-out frequently. Mine is only 1-year old. I'm thinking about throwing it in the trash.

very good string trimmer
4 Star Review   By jerry on Home Depot - Apr 11, 2012

I bought this trimmer yesterday after reading all the terrible reviews of it followed the included instructions with the exception that i used 40:1 oil mix instead of the 50:1 it says to use, and started it up and let it run at idle to give it a little breakin time about a quarter of a tank of fuel. pros : The motor is very easy to start, runs very well, should be very good on fuel. I shut it off, put more fuel in it and while the motor was warm i restarted it, stopped it multiple times on first pull. The trimmer only ways 10 pounds and has a comfortable feel to it. cons: I dont like the string feed head on it, I never have to much luck with them so i am going to spend 20 dollars on a better one that holds two strings. The motor runs very good but compared to my echo weed eater it is a weaker motor, so i think it will be good for small yards only. I dont normally write many reviews but after reading all the negative reviews on this i felt i should give my thoughts on it. I will put another review up after a few months of use to give a reliability review.

Worst Money I Ever Spent On A String Trimmer
1 Star Review   By MisterPugs on Home Depot - Mar 31, 2012

Starts great. Runs Great. String advance stinks. Never had string trimmer where string does not advance at least fairly consistently. Very frustrating. I have owned a couple other Homelite trimmers and not had much trouble with them at all. For this price range they typically lasted for me about 2 to 3 years using them once a week during spring, summer and fall. Very disappointed with this one. Not likely to buy another Homelite string trimmer.

Not even worth the $ you save
1 Star Review   By Chuck on Home Depot - Mar 28, 2012

I bought it because it was the "cheap"est model. Never again. It has no power. Wouldn't even complete my fairly small yard. Hard to start, no features. It is not worth it to save a few dollars. I bought on Sunday, trimmed half the yard and took it back on Wednesday. I bought the Echo 225 for twice the price and it is well worth it.

A good HOME OWNER tool
5 Star Review   By larcnt on Home Depot - Oct 27, 2011

I bought this unit to replace a prof. Johndeere unit I had for 11 years that got stolen. I knew the quality was not going to be near as good as the previous unit. I have a Homelite blower going on 6 years so I said,"why not". I was quite suprised. It does not have the power like the other but it does a good job for what it is. It starts a bit differently, having to hold the throttle on full, but it does start right up. Run it at 1/2 choke for a minuites and then go at it. Being as light as it is I was actually able to finnish my work quicker. Used it 4 times now. Not sure why all the negatives but I think it's a great unit for home use.

Do not buy this product
1 Star Review   By Robbie on Home Depot - Oct 23, 2011

Had this trimmer for 2 seasons first season had to get the carburetor replaced. I followed the instructions in the owners manual. When I took it to the closest service center, which by the way was about an hour from my house, the service man said that these trimmers are junk and that he is constantly repairing them. 2nd season after normal household use will not run unless on half choke and the carburetor needs adjustment again. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money to buy a good trimer. I will never own a homelite product again. Terrible!

Hard starting, dies giving it gas
1 Star Review   By nabulldog on Home Depot - Sep 5, 2011

When it was new out of the box it ran great. Since then, hard to start and if I'm lucky enough to get it started it dies when I give it gas. I have gone through it multiple times and made sure there was no dirt clogging the carburator jets and ports. I get the same results every time, hard to start and dies when you give it gas. Recently, it has become difficult to prime even with a new primer bulb. It appears to be starving for gas(replace gas lines with clear ones). I have checked the fuel filter which is clean, air flows easily through it. I spend twice as long trying to get the weed eater to run, than it takes me to cut my yard. Save yourself some head aches and get a more reliable weed eater(electric model). If I'm not mistaken I believe Ryobi and Homelite are the manufacture.

How does this get ANY good reviews
1 Star Review   By endofmyrope on Home Depot - Aug 14, 2011

This thing is a piece of junk!!! Do your due diligence ahead of time and see how many people are having trouble with these. You would expect a new trimmer to work at least for a year before having this many issues. Right out of the box, they are a pain to get started, then once you get it started you have to walk on eggshells with this thing. If you give it too much gas it stalls, if you don't give it enough...it stalls. Heaven for bid you let it sit for a few weeks, then you have to take it apart and manually clean the carburetor. So if you are unfortunate enough to buy this, here is how you can keep it in shape. Start it every day for about 15 to 20 minutes. If it's going to sit for more than a week, dump out all the oil/gas mixture and run it until it's empty prior to letting it sit. Best bet??? Don't touch this thing!

Very good for small lots, small budgets, and small expectations
4 Star Review   By gktn on Home Depot - Jul 28, 2011

This trimmer is good for small lots, small budgets, and small expectations. Don't expect it to be a $250 Echo and you won't be disappointed. I know there are lots of bad reviews - I read them too. I shopped around quite a bit, but got one anyway after having good results previously with a Homelite blower and curved shaft trimmer. With reasonable care the blower has lasted 10 yrs and still works o.k. The old trimmer only lasted 4 seasons (partly because I left it in the shed over winters - I won't do that again). The straight shaft is MUCH better than curved. The new quick load head is great, much improved over the old one, and bumps out more line as advertised. I loaded the larger .095 line and it works, but bogs down in thick weeds. Will switch back to .080, which is all I really need on my small lot. You can throw the guard away - it's pretty cheesy. But otherwise, after 3 uses, I'm pleased. It starts per the directions, and works as I expected. As a lefty, I found the exhaust well shielded. Figuring I get 5 seasons out of it - that's $20 bucks a year. For small things like this, I think cheaper is better. Coupled with Home Depot's return policy, I'm happy with this choice.

is a great machine for the price
5 Star Review   By garyo on Home Depot - Jul 18, 2011

have used this in lawn mowing business, mix the gas 32 to 1, not what manufacture recommends, have used this product on one very similar to this always a homelite, and always mixed the gas at 32 to 1 with no problems, was mowing n weedeating 40 yards a week n would get at least 3 seasons out of machine, n would use .080 line for the auto tap head. 32 to 1 mixture is 4 ounces of two cycle oil to one gallon of gas, or 8 ounces to two gallons of gas and make this mixture exactly like i said or it will overheat and be hard to start. when winding string in auto tap head, u wrap the string loose in the head, don't wrap it tight, or when the head gets hot it will weld the string to itself inside the head, don't cram as much string in the head as this will generate heat and weld the string, especially on the tap n go heads. u can't beat this machine for the price if u do it just the way i have posted on this product, i know it works, if it says 50 to 1, go to 32 to 1 on the oil mixture, i never could get one to run right on 50 to 1, but would run great on 32 to 1 mix

So far so good
5 Star Review   By Scermak on Home Depot - Jun 26, 2011

Was a little leary about this machien after reading the reviews but after day one it was flawless. Well almost- it seems to run better with 1/2 choke than in the run position. Filled it up with fresh mix, primed it, set to full choke, made a few pulls then it set it to 1/2 choke and went about my business. The gas tank is kind of small and I had to refill it, but other than that I like it. It is somewhat different in the starting proceedure in that you do have to hold the throttle wide open to start it, but that's very minor. I will leave another review at the end of the season since one day does not tell a lot in how things will work long term.

I have experienced all of the problems described in the other reviews. After 2 seasons of tweeking and repairing only to use it several times, the pull start recoil mechanism failed. Absolutely useless - calling it junk is a compliment
1 Star Review   By NickinNJ on Home Depot - Jun 19, 2011

It surprises me that anyone likes this tool. Mine is hard to start. Hard to keep running. Doesn't feed trimmer line. And is so loud, I have to wear ear plugs and a pair of gun-muffs! It takes 20 to 30 pulls (since new) to get it running. Then, finally when starts, it bogs down when you try to rev the motor. It doesn't feed line well so when you need more line, you have to turn it off and mess with the spool. Now, even with a hot engine, it refuses to start. Again, it has done all of this nonsense since new. I probably should have returned it to the Rockaway Home Depot immediately but I am like a lot of guys - I don't return things. I know this is the first and absolutely LAST Homelite product I'll ever buy. Next time, I'll get a Stihl - I bought one of their leaf blowers and it's a quality product. Homelite is absolute junk - and junk is a compliment!

1 Star Review   By Nogasneeded on Home Depot - May 31, 2011

First assembly step...install line spool. Problem, line spool retainer nut will not start. Because of that, I would stay away from Homelite.

4 Star Review   By like7cs on Home Depot - Apr 21, 2011

Ive owned several gas trimmers in the $100 range. Ryobi, Troy-Built and Homelight. The Homelight has outlasted them all by 2 seasons now. Im on my 3rd season with this model and I have never had a problem starting it. Plenty of power and not too heavy. Im glad I didnt read the reviews on here before going to purchase. The main reason I bought the Homelite other than the low price is because I saw a couple sitting on a commercial lawn moqing truck. Plus it comes with a 2 year warrenty.

poor product
1 Star Review   By disappointedipapio on Home Depot - Sep 12, 2010

This is a very poor product. My previous weed eater lasted 10+ years and I had to replace it because the gas tank was leaking. I only weed eat around my house, sidewalk, and driveway and have nothing but problems with the line feed on this Home Lite straight shaft product. The line always binds and it takes me about 3x longer than it should. I also have to pull the string out when only half used and restring the product just so I can finish my job. I am very disappointed with this product and will problaby be in the market for another new weed eater next summer. Do not buy this product if you like things that are easy to use, this one is definitely a disappointment.

I bought this to replace a 5+ year old Homelite straight trimmer that's been pretty dependable until recently. I figured this newer one would be just as comparable but was I wrong. Assembly was easy but everything felt so much flimsier and cheaper than my older Homelite. The string feeding mechanism is terrible and power feels half of the older one. After 30 minutes of trying to use it I'm going to return it and exchange for a different one.

This is an unsatisfactory trimmer.
1 Star Review   By pawhair on Home Depot - Jul 29, 2010

If I could give -0- stars for this trimmer, I would! I would not recommend it to anyone! Most of the problems have been posted, but I will reinforce them by reiterating: 1. UNBELIEVABLY hard to start when cold (and I don't mean cold weather!); 2. Will run only at certain angles, which is pretty bad for a trimmer; 3. Stopped feeding string when only half used; 4. Manual has wrong info for string replacement - I had to figure it out myself; 5. Upon removing spool's "cap/retainer," I discovered the bolt holding the head to the cable connector tube had been installed crooked and stripped the threads of the connector - I had to tap a new hole and use a different bolt. 6. The trigger "control" is extremely sensitive and difficult to to modulate the speed. 7. The manual's information is pretty sparse. I purchased this in July of 2009 and am still fighting it.

Will never purchase homelite again.
1 Star Review   By MikeinCO on Home Depot - Jul 25, 2010

Ive owned several older homelite products and figured id stick with the same brand when it came time to replace the weed eater. I bought the homelite and it will be going back ASAP. Thing starts for 60 seconds and slowly looses power until it dies. It gets VERY hot. I questioned the 50:1 mix ratio after first getting problems and mixed it to 40:1. No change, still wont run for more than 60 seconds. Its worth nothing more than its weight in scrap. DO NOT PURCHASE

great customer service
4 Star Review   By breadfan on Home Depot - Jul 24, 2010

I ordered this trimmer because the one I had for 10 years finally needed more repairs than it was worth but was still running. When my trimmer came in we found out that it was damaged upon opening. When calling customer service they arranged for pickup and sent another trimmer out less 10% no questions asked. The trimmer arrived promptly like I was told and is working great. With customer service like this I will not hesitate to give my business to Home Depot. Thank you very much.

Its Alright
3 Star Review   By bhunville on Home Depot - Jun 21, 2010

I bought this because i have previously owned a homelite trimmer and it worked well. When I arrived home I put my new one together and could not get it started for nothing and gas seemed to leak from the gas cap. I did like a previous reviewer stated and took off the breather cap and it cranked up after a couple of pulls. I was also able to work the gas cap to get the leaking to stop. Overall, I was impressed with the power of my new trimmer and it works well for the price.

The Worst Trimmer Model UT22650 Homelite
1 Star Review   By tjcas67 on Home Depot - Jun 19, 2010

The Homelite UT22650 is the worst trimmer I have owned. I will take it back. The control lever in located on the side at the exact level as my elbow. I must have accidetally switched it to choke 10 times. Very irritating. No clear instructions on how to restring. I had a Weedeater before with no problems.

I have owned a homelite ut-20777 straight shaft for going on 10 years it now needs a piece for the gas tank which i will fix. I am a grounds supervisor at a university campus I use nothing but stihl and i would put this trimmer against a stihl anyday. it lasted 10 years 6 hours of rough use 2 times a week RELIABLE!!! i just purchased this new one although i did put the old head on it the new head design is junk. ill never own a different brand. just remember to buy the old style head.if you want power and reliability and reliability and reliability buy Homelite.

makes a good Javelin
1 Star Review   By JennaPaul on Home Depot - May 26, 2010

Ok I bought it and since I read many reviews I assembled it in the parking lot added gas and cranked til it started. At first the "automatic" shifting choke was sticking but other than that it was great!. I used it to cut down some tall (but very thin) grass and lost all my line because the grass choke up around the back of the head and shoved it foward as if I was bumping it. Easy to remove the head and clean off wrapped around grass. tried to cut a hill with some plain ivy. prooved to be more than it could handle! i yanked and screwed up the shaft inside and then it would not auto feed at all! Now I will say it had alot of power - the shaft just could not handle it. as well if you need something for plain maintained grass this is worth it to you. (just don't let your neighbor borrow it for nything else). I said it made a nice javelin because after taking 2 hours to trim a hill that normall only takes 35 minutes I (had to remove the head every time the line got low to feed it "by Hand") I threw it and it flew like a hail mary throw at the super bowl. Any one want to compete at throwing one let me know!!! Atleast when I returned it the associate was very sweet and nice about it

Good trimmer with minor design problems
4 Star Review   By epowell on Home Depot - May 24, 2010

I bought this trimmer on Thursday. I could not get it to start for anything. Then I read the instructions on the side and realized I have been trying the 'usual' way to start a trimmer and not holding the throttle in while starting it, resulting in it flooding. Took the breather cap off the side and followed the directions and it started right up. I ran this trimmer for 3 hours on Saturday and it never hesitated to cut down anything I put in front of it. A lot of power for a 'light-weight' trimmer. My only gripe is the choke is in a bad place for a right handed user. I kept hitting the lever with my arm causing the trimmer to stall or almost stall before I moved the lever back into run position. Overall, an excellent inexpensive trimmer.
